Splashing Safely and Staying Sparkling: A Summer Guide to Your Pool

Summer is officially here, and if you’re anything like us, your pool is about to become the undisputed centre of your universe. As a pool maintenance team, nothing makes us happier than seeing a crystal-clear pool filled with laughing families.
To help you get the absolute most out of your swim season, we’ve put together our top insider tips for keeping your pool safe, sparkling, and chemical-balanced without over-medicating your water.
1. Safety First: The Golden Rules of the Deep End
Before we talk about water chemistry, let’s talk about the most important thing: the people inside the pool.
The "Designated Lifeguard" System: Even if your kids are great swimmers, distractions happen in a heartbeat. At gatherings, assign one adult to be the official "Water Watcher" for 30-minute shifts. Give them a physical object (like a funny hat or a specific cup) so everyone knows who is on duty.
Clear the Deck: Keep the immediate perimeter of the pool free of toys, flip-flops, and hoses. Tripping on the concrete is the fastest way to ruin a perfectly good pool day.
PoolToys: Inflatable water wings, noodles, and inner tubes can easily slip off, puncture, or deflate. They do not keep a child’s head reliably above water if they panic or flip over. When storing inflatable toys, deflate them completely and keep them in a cool, dry area. Leaving them baking in the direct sun breaks down the plastic, making them prone to sudden popping or tearing during next weekend's swim. Beware of Mold: Toss out squeeze toys or toys with internal cavities that trap water, as they quickly become breeding grounds for bacteria and mold.
2. Keep it Clean (And Cut Down on Chemicals)
We love a properly chlorinated pool, but our ultimate goal is always to help you use fewer chemicals. Heavy chemical use usually means the pool is reacting to a heavy load of organic waste. Here is how you can naturally keep the demand low:
The Power of the Pre-Swim Rinse: Did you know that a quick 60-second shower before jumping in removes about 80% of the sweat, body oils, deodorant, and sunscreens from your skin? When these enter the pool, they consume your chlorine rapidly, leading to that strong "pool smell" (which is actually used-up chlorine, not fresh chlorine). A quick rinse saves your water and helps our staff.
Skim Early, Skim Often: While our staff net the pool during our maintenance visits, debris will often land in the pool when we are not there, leaves, bugs, and pollen carry phosphates—the absolute favourite food of algae. By spending two minutes skimming floating debris off the top of the water before it sinks to the bottom, you prevent algae from starting and help us keep your pool algae free. If you don't have a pool net, these can be purchased from any pool shop or speak to us and we can bring you one.
Campaign pool net offer for existing and new customers:
(July 2026) 1x telescopic pole (2.4x2), 1 blue plastic net - £50.00
Email info@cdscyprus.com with your customer name and address so we can arrange to bring one and add this to your monthly account.
Mind the Dogs: Look, we love furry friends, but one large dog in a pool can introduce as much organic matter and bacteria as ten human swimmers. If Fido takes a dip, just know your filtration system and chlorine are going to have to work double-time that night.
Filtration, Filtration, Filtration: A pool filtration system is essential because it acts as the pool's circulatory system—mechanically removing debris like dirt and oils, evenly distributing sanitising chemicals, and keeping the water moving to prevent bacteria and algae from taking root. To keep the water safe and crystal clear, the system must run long enough each day to achieve a full "turnover," meaning the entire volume of pool water has passed through the filter at least once. For most residential pools, this requires running the pump for 8 to 12 hours a day during the summer; running it any less creates stagnant dead zones, deactivates your chemicals, and quickly turns a clean pool into an expensive health hazard.
3. A Gentle Reminder: We’re All on Team "Perfect Pool"
Every now and then, summer throws us a curveball. You wake up, and the pool looks a little cloudy, or a pump starts making a strange grinding noise. When things go wrong, we know it’s frustrating.
While it can be tempting to frustration-vent to the technician on your route, we gently ask for a little grace and partnership.
The Reality of Pool Care: Pool water is a living, breathing ecosystem. An unexpected heatwave, an overnight thunderstorm (which brings nitrogen and throws off pH), a hidden leak, or a heavy weekend pool party can radically change a pool's chemistry in less than 24 hours—even if our technician left it absolutely perfect the day before.
Ultimately, our team wants a problem-free pool just as much as you do. In fact, probably more! A perfectly balanced, smooth-running pool means our technicians can have a predictable, normal working day and get home to their own families. When a pool acts up, it means extra diagnostics, extra heavy lifting, and late nights for our crew.
We are always on your side, and our goal is to get things diagnosed and fixed as transparently and quickly as possible.
Here’s to a Brilliant Summer!
With a little proactive skimming, a quick pre-swim rinse, your pool is going to be the place to be this summer.
Ultimately, we have your back! We hope you all have a great summer and would like to thank our customers for your continued and valued business.
